Introduction

A Chara,

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our website which I hope you will find interesting and informative. Coláiste Mhuire opened in September 1996, replacing the old Vocational School, to meet the second level educational needs for the North-West Kilkenny areas of Johnstown, Urlingford, Crosspatrick, Galmoy, Lisdowney and Freshford.  Recent years has seen our catchment area expand to include an increasing numbers of students from bordering counties Tipperary and Laois.

The school, through a comprehensive education programme, aims to provide educational opportunities to meet the needs of each individual student. It is a non-selective school, enrolling pupils of the full ability range from all sections of the social strata. It is co-educational with a policy of eliminating gender bias, encouraging girls to study traditional boy’s subjects and vice versa. It provides religious education for all denominations.

It is a social and educational hub providing comprehensive second level schooling, including both an extensive Trasition Year Program and the Leaving Cert Applied syllabus.  Continuing education for adults is provided via FETAC (Further Education and Training Awards Council) in Childcare (Level 5 & 6), Secretarial Studies (Level 5) and Care of the Elderly (Level 5).  Coláiste Mhuire is also a major local community resource centre, with a vibrant Night Class program, with courses in areas such as Computers, Welding, Wood Turning, Digital Photography and Aerobics among others.

The aim of the school is to promote the total development of each individual student. With its enlightened, dedicated and highly trained staff the school continues to respond to the changing educational climate while considering the particular needs of the local community.

Towards achieving its aim, the school operates a strict code of discipline and prides itself on its record of instilling good manners and acceptable behaviour into its students. The school co-operates closely with parents in achieving this goal.

The school is a non-selective, non-denominational, co-educational school, which aims to promote the total development of each individual student.

Coláiste Mhuire provides a broad comprehensive education to meet the needs of its students.

The School has a wide range of facilities including: a Library, two Science Laboratories and a Demonstration Room, a Business Studies Room, three Computer Rooms, a Technical Drawing Room with Computers for Design & Construction Graphics, Wood Technology and Construction Studies Room, Metalwork and Engineering Room, Art and Crafts Room, Home Economics Room, a Language Lab, a General Purpose P.E. Hall and a Guidance Suite.

Outdoors facilities include: 3 Basketball Courts, 2 Tennis Courts, and a full size GAA playing field, a state-of-the-art Astro Turf complete with Floodlights and modern dressing rooms.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if would like to discuss any of the information on our website.
