Want to see Coláiste Mhuire in Minecraft?!

Tuesday, May 29th, 2018

Congratulations to the Leaving Cert Applied (LCA) Information & Communications Technology (ICT) students who All recently received Distinctions in their ICT Task.

This task involved building a scale model of our school in Minecraft!  You can take a brief Virtual Tour by clicking on the short clips below.

The cross-curricular approach required measuring the school using trundle wheels, counting all the windows and doors and even using a drone to get the aerial photos and to count the skylights!

Well Done to All the 6L students involved, their teacher and Numeracy co-ordinator Mr John Dunne & to Mr Martin Gleeson (principal & acting LCA co-ordinator) for funding the software and supporting this Numeracy initiative and overall creative process.

Coláiste Mhuire establishes Cluster through the School Excellence Fund

Saturday, May 5th, 2018

Coláiste Mhuire was recently successful in its application to the government’s School Excellence Fund (SEF) to secure additional funding to promote the teaching & learning of STEM subjects. This initiative is to support Schools to work together on projects in accordance with the government’s ambitious plans to increase the uptake of Science Technology Engineering & Maths subjects in schools and the pursuit of careers in these fields.
Coláiste Mhuire, which is already a Project School for the Junior Cycle Short Course in Coding, has established a Cluster with 5 local primary schools, namely Johnstown, Urlingford, Galmoy, Cullohill & Gortnahoe with all schools attending the recent launch in UCD by Minister Bruton where €20,000 was pledged to each cluster.
The aim of this cluster is the promotion of Coding & Computational Thinking in these Schools, which will form part of both the New Junior Cycle & Primary School Maths curricula as well as supporting the JC Short Course in Coding and the suite of STEM subjects offered in Coláiste Mhuire.
Pictured above are Cluster co-ordinator Mr John Dunne with LCA students (who presented their Minecraft Project to one of the participating schools) and Link Teacher Ms Siobhan Tobin (Urlingford NS). Second photo is with Mr Dermot Dunphy (principal) Urlingford NS.

Gala Dog Night both Enjoyable & Successful!

Friday, April 27th, 2018

Management, Staff and Parents/Guardians would like to say a big Thank You to our students, their families and the whole school community for their support of last week’s Gala Dog Night to raise funds for the school development fund. Click on this link to View More of the Photos

Due to the hard work of our committee and the range of revenue strands they pursued from Corporate Sponsorship of Races, to Buster Race draw, to a Raffle with excellent hampers and prizes,  a generous figure of approximately €27,000 was raised.  Allowing for costs, such as the prize fund, the final sum generated is in the region of an impressive €24,000!

Students from the neighbouring parishes to Coláiste Mhuire Johnstown who competed against The Staff in the Novelty Race!

Among the highlights was a Novelty Race featuring students from the surrounding parishes and GAA clubs competing on the Track against each other & more importantly, The Staff!!
