SEF Cluster

In April 2018 Coláiste Mhuire was successfully allocated funding through the School Excellence Fund (SEF) to establish a Cluster to promote Digital & STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Maths) in our local area. Further information on the SEF is available here.

The title of our project is “Coding & Computational Thinking in a Primary & Post-Primary Co-educational Context“.  We applied in conjunction with five local primary schools in the Kilkenny, Tipperary & Laois border region, namely:

St Kieran’s N.S. Johnstown, Co Kilkenny.

Scoil an Chroí Ró Naofa, Urlingford, Co Kilkenny.

Scoil Mhichil Naofa, Galmoy, Co Kilkenny.

Gortnahoe N.S., Thurles, Co Tipperary.

Scoil Tíghearnach Naofa, Cullohill, Co Laois.

You can visit any of the school’s website’s by clicking on their link.

The co-operating teachers involved are photographed below:

L-R: David O’Dwyer (Gortnahoe NS), Phil Ryan (Scoil Tíghearnach Naofa, Cullohill), Tom Percy (Scoil Mhichil Naofa, Galmoy), Cllr Mary Hilda Cavanagh (Chairperson BOM @ CMJ), Aidan Liston (PDST), Jacinta McHugh (Scoil an Chroí Ró Naofa, Urlingford), John Dunne (Cluster Co-ordinator @ CMJ), Richard Morkan (DevEire, software developer) & John Curran (St Kieran’s N.S. Johnstown)

We are supported at Department of Education level through Mr Aidan Liston of the PDST (Professional Development Service for Teachers).

We are further assisted in our cluster through links with both third level, particularly LIT Tipperary (Thurles).  Lecturers Ms Pam O’Brien and Ms Natasha Kiely are providing Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to the co-operating teachers on Cluster Days, as well as additional courses and conferences in LIT, such as the ICT in Education Conference where some of our students showcase.

We have industry links with local companies in the Engineering and Software fields, namely Gleeson Steel & Engineering Ltd and DevEire.  If any other industries are interested in supporting us we would be delighted to hear from you via our School Office on 056-8831135 or email us on info@ColaisteMhuireKK.ie

Finally, you can keep up-to-date on developments by following our Twitter account on @CMJ_STEM

Similarly, a blog has been set up by Galmoy NS to report on our activities each term, which you can read here.
