Coláiste Mhuire establishes Cluster through the School Excellence Fund

Saturday, May 5th, 2018

Coláiste Mhuire was recently successful in its application to the government’s School Excellence Fund (SEF) to secure additional funding to promote the teaching & learning of STEM subjects. This initiative is to support Schools to work together on projects in accordance with the government’s ambitious plans to increase the uptake of Science Technology Engineering & Maths subjects in schools and the pursuit of careers in these fields.
Coláiste Mhuire, which is already a Project School for the Junior Cycle Short Course in Coding, has established a Cluster with 5 local primary schools, namely Johnstown, Urlingford, Galmoy, Cullohill & Gortnahoe with all schools attending the recent launch in UCD by Minister Bruton where €20,000 was pledged to each cluster.
The aim of this cluster is the promotion of Coding & Computational Thinking in these Schools, which will form part of both the New Junior Cycle & Primary School Maths curricula as well as supporting the JC Short Course in Coding and the suite of STEM subjects offered in Coláiste Mhuire.
Pictured above are Cluster co-ordinator Mr John Dunne with LCA students (who presented their Minecraft Project to one of the participating schools) and Link Teacher Ms Siobhan Tobin (Urlingford NS). Second photo is with Mr Dermot Dunphy (principal) Urlingford NS.

Coláiste Mhuire Win Leinster Senior Hurling Title!

Friday, February 26th, 2016

Congratulations to the players and management involved in today’s historic victory over St Mary’s C.B.S. Enniscorthy (Wexford).  The prize was the Leinster Post-Primary Schools Senior Hurling “B” Rest of Leinster shield and the game was played in MW Hire Park, Dunmore with referee Anthony Stapleton (Laois).

The C.B.S. started the brighter and led 0.03:0.02 after 10 minutes but the Johnstown lads settled mid-way through the half and were deserving of their 0.05:0.03 half time lead.

The St Mary’s boys again started the second half brighter and levelled matters at 0.05 a piece after 5 minutes.  However, they were to be held scoreless for the remainder of the game while Coláiste Mhuire kept the score board ticking over at regular intervals.  The result of which saw Coláiste Mhuire finish worthy winners on a 0.09:0.05 scoreline.

Afterwards, former Kilkenny hurler and Johnstown native Pat Henderson presented captain David Doheny (Harps GAA, Laois) with the Leinster Post-Primary Schools Senior Hurling “B” Rest of Leinster shield.

The management and players would like to thank everyone from the school community and neighbouring clubs who have supported them to date. They now go on to contest the All-Leinster final versus Ard Scoil Rís (Dublin 8) on Monday, 7th March at a venue to be decided.   Continued and increased support of our team would be greatly appreciated.

Cycle Against Suicide comes to Coláiste Mhuire Johnstown on Friday, May 8th!

Thursday, April 30th, 2015

CAS Logo

Next Friday, 8th May 2015 Coláiste Mhuire host the Cycle Against Suicide.  We are an official “Sos Beag” (Small Break) on their route from Thurles to Portlaois.  They are anticipating between 250-300 cyclists on this day (weather permitting), with 4 staff from Coláiste Mhuire Johnstown and approx 8 students making up a dozen of those.  Our contingent will cycle the 23km from the Presentation Secondary in Thurles to Johnstown along the N8 (Old Dublin-Cork Road) taking in Urlingford around 3.30pm before stopping in the school for the “Sos” between approx 3.40 & 4.20.  Alternative arrangements for collection of students by buses &/ or parents/guardians are to be put in place for the day and will be made known at the earliest opportunity next week.

As many of you may know, there are a number of support vehicles and media personnel that travel with the large peloton.  Some celebrity cyclists are expected and may be confirmed closer to the time.

The students, staff and management, coupled with our partners on our Local Education Committee, including Ossory Youth, the ETB School Completion Programme, local primary schools and more, have been working hard toward this event.  This is the Red Letter Day at the end of a busy year of Mental Health Awareness Initiatives and Workshops for Building of Resilience & Coping Skills.  We hope that our school community and the general public can support the day in any way the can and help promote awareness for Mental Health & Mental Fitness.
