Christmas Fair

Preparation is well under way for our maiden Christmas fair which we are running on Sunday 26th November from 12 noon to 4pm. The fair will include demonstrations in cookery, make-up, hair up-styles, and woodturning. Free kids Face painting and craft activities along with a surprise visitor will entertain the little ones. These activities as well as many more stalls and stands are sure to make it a very enjoyable and entertaining afternoon.

Retirement

Congrats to Principal Michael Killeen and teacher Patsy Costello who recently retired from Coláiste Mhuire. Both were hugely respected by all of the school community for their many years’ service and this was evident at their recent retirement celebration attended by family, friends and past and present colleagues.

We greatly appreciate the great legacy that both leave behind and wish them health and happiness in their retirement.

Wellbeing

Encouraged by our recent CPD day on wellbeing in Junior Cycle, the staff and students look forward to the continued implementation of wellbeing into all aspects of our school life. The mission of JCT Wellbeing is to promote wellbeing, a sense of satisfaction and happiness. It is an inclusive approach couched in the indicators of Wellbeing: active, aware, connected, resilient, responsible and respected. Staff have committed to ensure that through learning in wellbeing, students develop the knowledge, understanding, skills, capabilities, and attributes that they need for human flourishing. There is a recognition that a sense of wellbeing and connectedness is vital to academic, social, emotional and physical wellness and resilience of young people. The staff at Colaiste Mhuire want students to experience opportunities which are designed not only to raise their awareness of future choices, but also raise their expectations and aspirations. Wellbeing will be a game changer in our Education System. We are excited for positive change, whilst understanding wellbeing is a Whole School Project and a Community Endeavour is needed!

U14 Football

Our U14 footballers got their season off to a winning start with a 6:05 to 4:03 victory over Abbey community College. Well done to all players on a hard fought victory.

Junior Camogie

Well done to our junior camogie team who got their year off to a winning start with a 4-7 to 1-3 win over St Brigid’s College Callan. This builds on the magnificent Leinster win last year. Scorers on the day included Eimear Fitzpatrick, Meghan Grehan Carol, Ciara O Shea and Aoife Ryan. Our next opposition is Carnew.

Congratulation to Coláiste Mhuire Girls Jade Bergin, Roisín Phelan, Eimear Fitzpatrick and Sophie McCabe. L; All were part of the successful U16 Harps team who recently won the All Ireland B competition against Antrim. Well done Girls!

Girls Basketball

Basketball in Coláiste Mhuire continues to go from strength to strength. The girls have been undefeated in their campaign to date proving triumphant against Pobailscoil Kilkenny, Grennan of Thomastown and Ballinakill. With a coaching team made up of five staff and on expert coach Joe Byrne the future is looking positive.

U16 Hurling

Our u16 hurlers have made great progress since u14. They were narrowly beaten in our first two games despite great individual performances from Eoin Delaney, Billy McEvoy and Jack Hickey. A victory in the next game will see this hardworking group of players progress to the next stage.

Senior Hurling

Preparation is well underway for our 1st game in the competition against Mountrath which is fast approaching. Thanks to Our Lady’s Templemore and CBS Kilkenny for two hard contested challenge matches. Training has been going well and our team is shaping up nicely.

First Year Hurling

Thirty first years have togged out for training sessions over the past few week and show great promise. Their first contest will be on Friday next when they attend a Leinster Blitz.

Upcoming Events at Coláiste Mhuire Johnstown (November 2010)

Monday, November 8th, 2010

There are a number of events due to take place at Coláiste Mhuire over the coming days and weeks, including School Closures and Half Days.

There will be a Parent-Teacher Meeting for Junior Cert, Leaving Cert Applied (Year 2) and Traditional Leaving Cert students on Thursday, 11th November 2010.  This will take place in the school gym & library between the hours of 2:00pm & 4:00pm.  As this is an exam year for all concerned, the management and staff encourage as many parents as possible to attend in order to receive feedback on your child’s performance to date.  In addition, Mr Martin Fahy (Guidance Counselor at Coláiste Mhuire) will also be present to answer any questions you may have.  As a result of this P-T Meeting, the school will close for a Half Day at 12.40 on Thursday 11th November.

Our Senior Hurlers play neighbours St. Fergal’s of Rathdowney in the second round of the Leinster Vocational Schools Senior Hurling Championship on Friday 12th November @12.30pm in Johnstown (Fenian’s Grounds).  Coláiste Mhuire drew their first outing against rivals Banagher of Offaly and are hoping to go one better this week.  However, another draw should secure a place in the semi finals of the competition.  The management & staff of Coláiste Mhuire would like to take this opportunity to wish Mr Martin Gleeson & Mr Alan Curran and their panel of players the best of luck this week.

The Annual Open Day for Incoming First Years place next Friday, 19th November 2010.  A number of primary schools are due to attend and experience the vast range of subjects & excellent facilities we have to offer at Coláiste Mhuire Johnstown.  We look forward to sharing a wonderful day with ye and hope it helps you and your parents make an informed and wise decision to attend Coláiste Mhuire next year.  (Please note that the school will be otherwise closed on this Friday 19th November, with the exception of the student volunteers for the day).

The management and staff at Coláiste Mhuire have procured the services of experts in the area of study to deliver a Study Skills Seminar to students in 3rd, 5th & 6th year.  We have negotiated a keen rate of €10 per student.  We feel this offers excellent value as it includes a 2 hour Student Seminar on the afternoon of Tuesday, 23rd November between approximately 2:00pm & 4:00pm (T.B.C.).  Furthermore, the fee also includes a Seminar for Parents of participating students that will take place later the same evening (Tuesday 23rd) at approximately 7.30pm (T.B.C.).  A letter including all the details of the seminar and confirming the above times is due to go out this week.  Should you require any further information, please contact the school office on 056-8831135.

Finally, the following School Closures and Half Days are due to take place this month:

There will be a Half Day on Thursday, 11th November @12.40pm due to a Parent Teacher Meeting (as outlined above)

The school will be Closed on Friday, 19th November & Monday 22nd November.

School will Re-open Tuesday, 23rd November.  However, the class groups not attending the Study Skills Seminar will have a Half Day on Tuesday 23rd.

Should you require confirmation of these dates or further explanations, please contact the office on 056-8831135.
